This is not a game to the Indigenous people, it is similar to a religion. The traditional wood lacrosse stick is a very sacred item to the Indigenous peoples. As a small lacrosse stick is placed in the cradle, and many a buried with their lacrosse stick. Similar to a cross being placed on a baby of a non Indigenous people and some are buried with a cross. I recently learned of the cultural significance of the traditional wood lacrosse stick, that it is the opinion of this writer that only Indigenous people ought to be the only caretaker of these sticks. The reason is, too many non Indigenous people are very disrespectful of these sticks by how they are treated. Why there was a recent Insurance video with Larry Bird using a wood traditional lacrosse stick to smash things. He didn’t use a baseball bat, or a hockey stick or a golf club bc these are predominantly pale skinned people game. My favourite video of Mr. Alf Jacques, when he once said, there is nothing like going out to the shop in the winter, with a warm fire going, listening to some blues, carving sticks. Life is good. R.I.P. Mr. Jacques, your work is still very much of a treasure.

WOW - so worthwhile to watch. It is part of the Ontario Palliative Care program I am doing to be a volunteer at my local Windsor-Essex Hospice. I am so happy they made us watch it in the Spirituality module of the program. Being a nurse for over 43 years, and presently off with work-related PTSD this speaks to me as well. There is a death and need to grieve for what I have lost. Not just the 1 1/2 years I have had to take off due to it, but also as Helen says in one part "The world I thought I believed in doesn't actually exist." Regardless of where you are in your life, if you have 50 minutes watch this. This wise, kind compassionate woman cannot help but strike a cord within you with her message, or because there is no accident you are seeing this today and took the time to read it. If you or a loved one is dealing with a chronic disease or end of life this fits too. And if you are at that point - search out the programs through our Hospice - you will be surprised how they can help, and not just with end of life. Thanks Helen - great talk!!!
